WE LOVE HAITI
By Kelly Joachim |
In 2012, my boyfriend Gardy and I moved in together and the Universe treated us to an unexpected gift.
Making the decision to live together was a pivotal moment in our relationship.
We were excited, and it felt like the most aligned “next step.”
Gardy had arranged for us to stay in a 2-bedroom rental in Brooklyn, NY, which was fitting because it is where he grew up and a city I have always gravitated towards.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Gardy is first generation Haitian-American and I am what you might call a “transplant” from Florida; I moved to NYC in 2006.
To be over a thousand miles away from home as a young adult was challenging, so I consider myself lucky to have met Gardy and his loving family.
They welcomed me into their lives with open arms, initiating me into many of their beautiful Haitian traditions — a sentiment that I will always be grateful for.
The day Gardy and I moved in together is a day I will never forget.
To help with the heavy lifting I hired an independent moving company, Intense Movers. I remember coming downstairs to meet them outside and as I walked over to the truck, it was as if time stopped.
You see, Intense Movers repurposed a small fleet of used trucks for their indie operation by adorning them with rare graffiti art, and my truck just so happened to have a giant red heart on the side that read “We Love Haiti.”
I was completely awe-struck.
In that moment, this incredible God wink mirrored back our love for each other and completely validated our decision to move in together.
8 years later, I am pleased to report we are still living together happily married as a family unit of 3.
